Grammatically speaking

A message from my daughter Leslie: Sometimes, I want to print these on business cards and hand them out to people.

Really happy that she listened and learned from my rantings around the house:-)

The ‘Goat Man’

Does anyone remember hearing about the GOAT MAN?The Goat Man, Ches McCartney, was legend in South Georgia, journeying from town to town with his herd. He might have lived in a number of places, but I remember seeing his roadside “spread” outside Jeffersonville on Highway 80. Would pass by his place en route to Macon in the days before I-16 was finished. The cluttered area featured a wooden structure decorated with hubcaps. Objets d′art he apparently collected on this travels dangled from trees while goats wandered about under the canopy of pines. It was a real slice of Americana.

Saw him with his goat-powered wagon on several occasions sometimes after his heyday in South Georgia and it looked somewhat like this. This looks like it was shot with Kodacolor film so the timing is right. Also, there are similar poses at the http://thegoatman.com/ from postcards he used to sell during travels.

Who remembers the "Goat Man?"For the Goat Man fans out there, here is a fairly decent color photo that is new to me.

Looks like the goats like Pepsi. Highly doubtful this was a commercial product placement.

The original mobile ad delivery system

wgnjrWhen he was in college, my father worked some as a sign painter. One of dad’s schemes was to paint signs on his jalopy so folks in the greater Statesboro area of the 1930s could take advantage of low cost advertising.

In retrospect, my father was ahead of his time with Mobile Ad Delivery.

The photo (Circa 1938). Dad in passenger seat with then Dean Zach Henderson driving and Miss Sophie Johnson (of the Johnson Hall fame at Georgia Southern) in the rumble seat take a spin his sign-mobile. He’d paint local ads on this for a modest fee. Notice the “WGN” monogram on the door.

Twenty-three skeedoo, baby.

‘Not dead yet…’

Was tempted to post the report that Magic City’s favorite scoundrel, disgraced ex-Mayor Larry Langford, was dead at 65.

Then, while double-checking, the Channel 42 link itself died. A few minutes later the link reemerged with the headline “Langford Gravely Ill.”

Pythonesque: The reporter says,”bring out yer dead.” Langford’s reply: “I’m not dead yet.”

Stay tuned:-)
