The Goat Man, Ches McCartney, was legend in South Georgia, journeying from town to town with his herd. He might have lived in a number of places, but I remember seeing his roadside “spread” outside Jeffersonville on Highway 80. Would pass by his place en route to Macon in the days before I-16 was finished. The cluttered area featured a wooden structure decorated with hubcaps. Objets d′art he apparently collected on this travels dangled from trees while goats wandered about under the canopy of pines. It was a real slice of Americana.
Saw him with his goat-powered wagon on several occasions sometimes after his heyday in South Georgia and it looked somewhat like this. This looks like it was shot with Kodacolor film so the timing is right. Also, there are similar poses at the http://thegoatman.com/ from postcards he used to sell during travels.
For the Goat Man fans out there, here is a fairly decent color photo that is new to me.
Looks like the goats like Pepsi. Highly doubtful this was a commercial product placement.
From Strange Alabama Who remembers the “Goat Man?”
